GAZ'S HARLEY

First set-up in workshop waiting for bearing cups

This project started accidentally while visiting Russ at Bretton Motorcycles for some bars for my Harley. He had a frame, forks and a rear wheel sitting in his shop. The frame is an Ultima 250mm wide drive ridged and the forks are called ( fat bastard?) I was sold on it - its got the lines I was after. Did some quick mental arithmetic and figured it was worth being skint for – and the deal was done. Lucky I’ve got an understanding missus that doesn’t mind eatin beans!. Once I got the frame home, I ordered a bearing-cup set with internal fork stops for a cleaner look. Harry, one of the Chopper Club members from North Wales, told me he was willing to let me have a West Coast Choppers tank for a good price – Harry is a top man – another deal done and more beans on the menu.

Bearing Cups

The bearing-cups arrived from JP Cycles within a week and fitted without any problems, enabling me to fit the front end. The frame has a 38o rake and the forks have an additional 5 o rake on the bottom yoke. I originally wanted a Rev-Tech 110 engine, but was put off by the alleged top end problems I’d heard about so I had a word with Bill (ex Trading Post) and we did a deal on a 96 ci S&S. The Heinz tins are stacking up and the wind is really whistling around our gaff. I’m really skint now and the next problem is finding a gearbox – think I’m gonna have to have a garage sale.

Ultima 6 speedGearbox

This month I sold a couple of next doors kids and raised just enough cash for this Ultima gearbox and a BDL 3 3/8 Top Fuel primary

Well, Xmas is well behind me and its time to get back in the garage. I’m a regular visitor to e-bay and came across this seat on the US site. The one I ordered should have been 9” wide but when it arrived it had magically grown another 2”. The quality is top notch for the price and I think it looks well on the bike. Further, I couldn’t be bothered with all the hassle of packing it up back to the states. But that’s the gamble with e-bay.

I’ve also just picked up an oil tank with bat tray incorporated .

I also acquired an 11 inch rear fender that’s going to need a fair bit of chopping down on the dry build.

My first purchase from e-bay was an 130 tooth belt drive with a 65 tooth rear and a 32 tooth front pulley. It was all OK until I measured the gearbox to rear wheel and realised I made a bit of a cock up for these pulleys as the measurements dictate a . 125 tooth belt. Fortunately, the 130 belt will not go to waste as I can use it on my other bike.

Today, I have been snooping again on ebay in the hope of spotting bargains. I’ve just managed to secure myself a set of pipes - minus the flange and retaining rings so as soon as I get these, I can set the pipes up.

Now I have fitted the flange & rings to the pipes and they are bolted in place, and am well happy with the way they are sitting.
While mooching on the internet yet again, I spotted a 70 tooth pulley-break which is the dogs. This means that I will need a 30 tooth front pulley with a 127 tooth belt. (I tried it with the 32 tooth front and 130 tooth belt that I already have but its taking up most of the adjustment in the wheel & is running too close to the primary. I can cure this problem by running a smaller drive pulley

Setting the belt up has given me the chance to check the alignment between engine and primary and gearbox and its all good.
Once its set up properly the rear end should look ultra clean showing all the spokes on one side

My latest acquisition is a 2.4 kw thunderfire starter with remote starter button. I’m well chuffed with this, not just because of the very good price paid, but also because it’s a nice looking piece of kit with the added bonus of a secondary starter.

i fitted a headlight i got for £40 on ebay new its a 5-3/4" job its chunky and i thought it would match the fat front end a treat i am well happy with it i have also bolted the starter in place .it was a sunny day so i put the belt on just to see what its going to look like i guess im impatient to see what its going to end up like do have quite a few more parts to get hold of but i'm getting there .

I managed to get a 126 tooth belt from ebay it will do to set it up but I am going to get a new one sometime I fitted it on with a bdl front pulley a 29 tooth lightweight item this new set up now gives clearance for the starter jack shaft to engage properly
that was a problem with the 32 tooth one that I had on Iam going to sell the 130 tooth belt and the pullys that went with them on good old ebay !
